Wound closure biomaterials are generally divided into three major categories: suture materials; medical tapes – bandages or staplers / ligating clips; and skin glue – tissue adhesives.
Sutures (surgical stitches) are the most widely used in wound closure. A suture is a strand of material, either natural or synthetic, used to ligate (tie off) blood vessels or ducts during surgery and to approximate (sew) tissue together while healing takes place. They are divided into two basic groups with respect to the structure: multifilament (twisted, braided) and monofilament.
The selection of suture material to be used on a particular tissue is based on the individual characteristics (durability, handling, and knot-security), the age and condition of the patient, and the surgeon’s expertise, experience, and preference.
